Ideas on How to Divide Your Studio Apartment To Partition off Sleeping Area

The challenge many studio apartment dwellers face is how to separate the bed from the common area.  Nobody wants to walk into a room to see a bed in the middle of  living room next to a coffee table.  Since there is just one open room, the idea is to conceal the bed creating almost a separate bedroom area. The question is what type of room divider to get.  Depending on the layout of the studio apartment, there are many ways to section off the sleeping area.

If the studio has a sleeping alcove, this makes the it much easier to create a partition to conceal the bed from the rest of the room.  Some people will use a curtain to that will cover the whole sleeping area from wall to wall.  This can work well depending on the size of the room and the number of windows. Because a curtain hangs from ceiling to floor, this can make the space feel a lot smaller.  In bigger studios, a curtain can work well in the room provided that the sleeping alcove is on the smaller side.

Some people use backless bookcases which can be quite functional if you want to store things or display decorative accessories.  These types of bookcases are bit more expensive and do not provide actual privacy if that happens to be what one is looking for.  A bookcase room divider defines the space, it does not conceal it.  Also most studio apartment dwellers are on the move more often the one bedroom dwellers, so this can be quite a pain to disassemble and move in the future.

Another idea is to use free standing panel partitions.  These tend to be contemporary in look with metal, acrylic and plastic elements.  These types of partitions work well in big loft areas or offices.  However they are also quite costly.  A 75" wide panel partition usually starts at about $800 and up.

Lastly, the best idea is to use your sofa at the foot of the bed with a room divider screen standing in between the sofa and the bed.  This configuration works best when the bed is placed in the middle of the wall rather than the corner.  I have come across studio apartments where the bed is behind the sofa yet there is no screen.  This is quite an ugly look.  The rule is that no bed should be in view when you are in the common area.  A minimum of four panels is necessary to cover the length of a three seat sofa.  Ideally 5-8 panels is better and will really create a feel of having a separate bedroom.
